Inverness made the trip to the granite city with a good mix of youth and experience for the opening fixture of the 2010 season. Due to a number of late call off's and unavailability the side was a long way from being as strong as it could be. However, despite this, it was Inverness who took the lead of in 17 minutes following some intense pressure for the Aberdeen side in the opening period of the match. A long range effort from Allan McLeod in the middle of the park deceived the Aberdeen keeper and struck the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the Highland Capital side. For the next ten minutes Inverness pushed the Aberdeen defence and were unlucky not to extend their lead, while at the other end of the park, the town defence, marshalled by vetran Clive Girvan did sterling work to defend the slender one goal advantage. However, Aberdeen made their breakthrough in the 27th minute when former Skye player Kenny MacLeod converted to equal the scores. Nine minutes later John Sean gave Aberdeen the lead. The score remained 2-1 going into the interval, due in no small part to a fine display of goal keeping from Adam MacMaster in the Inverness goals.
During the second half the experience of the Aberdeen side became more evident, and this was rewarded in the 59th minute when they increased their lead through Chris Bowerman. Eight minutes later former Beauly played Stevie MacKenzie added his name to the goal scoring list to make it 4-1. Kenny MacLeod then went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 74th and 86th minutes.
Although a disappointing score line to begin their League campaign with, Inverness can make many positives, in particular fine displays from the young Inverness players. In the end the experience of the Aberdeen team was the difference between the sides.
